The Lawyer Card is a personal ID that lawyers and authorised staff can use to access secure online applications, such as those operated by the NOvA and the Council for the Judiciary. The physical card is also used by lawyers to access prisons and court buildings.
It is very important that great care is taken with Lawyer Cards. The cards can be used for both high-assurance electronic authentication and physical legitimation. The Lawyer Card is a professional certificate covered by PKI Government: an identification document for use within a state-regulated profession, appropriate for high-level identification. Similar identifications are used for professions such as accountants, notaries, doctors and bailiffs.
The scheme’s high-level assurance involves the use of a user name-password combination plus a second authentication factor in the form of an OTP. In addition, cards are issued to holders in person. Consequently, a Lawyer Card is also acceptable for the validation of electronic legal procedures.
